General Questions

What are hashtags and @mentions and why should I use them?

Hashtag

A hashtag is a “#” symbol put in front of a word/idea/phrase to identify and tag content on a specific topic. The “#” symbol serves two main purposes: organize content, and increase discoverability and views.

Organizing Content

If you create a series of related videos, including a consistent hashtag will help to tie them together. For Premium Members, it will also make it easy for your Admins/Editors to pull them into related articles and/or create custom feeds. For example, if you regularly cover the one sports team, you could tag all related videos with #[sportsteam]. If your property has a specific section page for that team, than the Admin/Editor may create a feed and pull in all videos through this consistent hashtag, like was done here: http://www.denverpost.com/nuggets.

Here are more examples where a consistent hashtag was used to organize content:
– #sydneytohobart: http://www.theaustralian.com.au/sport/sydney-hobart.
– #peoplecannes: http://www.people.com/people/special/0,,20810721,00.html.

Increasing Discoverability and Views

If you share your video to Twitter/Facebook, including the hashtag will help that Tweet/Post show up in Search, increasing the potential views.

Depending on the type of content you create, research typical trending hashtags. For example, if you cover weather in Denver, #Cowx is a popular hashtag used to describe all weather conditions and events relevant to the state.

@Mention

An @mention is an “@” symbol put in front of a username to identify and/or notify a particular person or brand. Like hashtags, @mentions can help increase discoverability and views for your video.

If you plan to share this video to Twitter, be sure to include the person or brand’s Twitter username (a.k.a, handle). Upon sharing the video to Twitter, the user will be notified and have the opportunity to re-Tweet.

Members: @mention your brand account in all video titles, so that Admins/Editors may easily re-Tweet your content upon sharing to Twitter.

Why does it take so long to upload a video via mobile?

In order to ensure the most reliable and efficient upload, we recommend you connect your device to a wifi network (i.e. wireless home or business router).  If you can’t upload from a wi-fi network because you are “in the field,” you must use a cellular data connection (i.e. AT&T/Verizon/Sprint/etc), mobile wifi hotspot or “mi-fi.” Learn more about the differences here.

If needed, you can create and store videos in the Tout mobile app with your “Queue” and wait until you are in an area with a better connection.

Low cellular data connectivity is generally the main factor that contributes to difficulty uploading. Your local cell tower and service area/provider my be the ultimate culprit and those convenient service bars on your device that indicate connectivity, are not always the most reliable indicator of upload capability (read more here).  If you’d like to gain insight into your actual connection speed, we recommend you download the following app now so when you are in the field, you can accurately gauge your cellular connection and plan accordingly:

1.  Download Speed Test by Ookla for either iPhone or Android.

2.  “Allow” the app to use location and tap “Begin Test”:

Begin Test

3.  Note your results and share if needed with a Tout team member if you are trouble shooting:

Share Speed Test ResultsEmail Speed Test Results
With a (poor) 1Mbps connection, 0.125 (1/8) MB will upload per second.  Meaning it will take roughly 192 seconds to upload a 60 second Tout video.  Generally, a 60 second Tout video is between 14-24 MB.

How do I schedule a video?

Member
The ability to schedule a video can only be done by your Admin/Editor. To do so, your editor would need to change your privileges to Moderated, requiring them to approve all of your video before going live. As part of the approval process, they could schedule a video to go live at a specific time. We plan to bring the ability to schedule videos directly into the Tout app in the future. In the meantime, here are two potential workarounds:

  1. Turn Queue off to turn off automatic publishing. Store the video in your queue and toggle the queue back on when you are ready to publish your video.
  2. If you have the “Save to Camera Roll/Gallery” feature enabled, all videos will be saved to your device. With the Queue turned off, delete the video from the queue. When you are ready to publish the video, with the Queue turned back on, grab the video from your Camera Roll/Gallery and proceed to publish. (Use this option if you want to continue to publish other videos in the interim, as the first option will store all new videos in the queue until toggled back on.)

Troubleshooting

Why are my videos listed under “Pending Review”?

If your videos are listed under “Pending Review”, this means that you are listed as “Moderated” in your brand’s Organization, requiring all videos be approved before going live.

You may contact your Organization’s Admin Editor and request that your privileges be changed from “Moderated” to “Automatic” publishing.

  • Follow instructions provided to you via email

If you don’t receive the password reset email (check spam folder too), please email support@tout.com with the Subject Line: “[Username] Password Reset”

How do I remove a video from the Tout app’s “Uploading” page?

Android

  • Tap menu (top left) or swipe right from left side of screen
  • Select “Uploading” from left side rail
  • Tap three dots to the right of the video you want to delete
  • Press “Delete”

What do I do if my video(s) are not uploading?

If videos(s) fail to upload in the Tout app, check these two things first:

  1. Uploading: Make sure that “Uploading” toggle is turned on to allow for auto-uploading
  2. Network Connectivity: Switch to a higher-performing network (such as LTE or WIFI), and keep the Tout app running in the foreground.

Try these tips if your queue is set to on and you’re on a high-performing network, but videos still fail to upload:

  • Restart your device
  • Switch “Uploading” toggle off and on while staying on “Uploading” screen until the video uploads
  • Toggle “Airplane Mode” off and on to reset cellular signal
  • Force-quit other unused apps running in the background
  • Force-quit the Tout app and re-open app
  • If “Save to Camera Roll” is turned on:
    • Option A: Delete video from “Uploading” and re-upload the video from your video library
    • Option B: Email video to yourself or an Admin > sign in to Tout account on Tout.com and upload via desktop

How do I force quit the Tout app?

iOS

  • Double tap the phone’s menu button (bottom middle)
  • Locate the video thumbnail and swipe up (if on iOS7 or greater), or press and hold the video icon and click the “X” mark

Android

  • Go to the device’s settings
  • Select “Applications”
  • Select “Manage Applications”
  • Switch to the “Running” tab to view only active/running apps (or swipe screen to left until Running tab appears)
  • Locate Tout app and click “Force Stop”

Note: Force quitting the app will log you out and delete any videos currently in progress/not yet submitted. Videos stored in your queue will remain in your queue.

These same instructions can also be used to force quit other apps which may be using up your phone’s memory and slowing your video upload.

This option can be reset through the Tout app’s settings

  • Sign in to Tout app with email and password
  • Go to the app’s menu (depending on the type of device, there will be three dots in the top right corner or a menu button on the phone’s native device)
  • Select “Settings”
  • Under “General” section, select “Create Tout from”
  • Tap circle icon next to “Ask”

I’m part of an Organization; how come I can only record up to 15-seconds clips?

In order to get Tout’s enhanced features and functionality (like record/upload up to 60 seconds in the mobile app) you must first be invited to an organization by an Admin/Editor of your publications organization.

If you have received and accepted the invite link from your Organization and the time limit in your Tout camera is still 15 seconds, try these solutions:

  • Force quit the Tout app
  • Reopen the mobile app and check if the new recording time has been reflected.
  • Double check that the current account you are logged into is the one that has been upgraded by your organization’s admin.

Not the username that should be upgraded?

    • Log out of the app
    • Sign in with the credentials associated with your account.
    • Email support@tout.com and provide the username of the duplicate account so that we may remove it from Tout.
