Why does it take so long to upload a video via mobile?

In order to ensure the most reliable and efficient upload, we recommend you connect your device to a wifi network (i.e. wireless home or business router).  If you can’t upload from a wi-fi network because you are “in the field,” you must use a cellular data connection (i.e. AT&T/Verizon/Sprint/etc), mobile wifi hotspot or “mi-fi.” Learn more about the differences here.

If needed, you can create and store videos in the Tout mobile app with your “Queue” and wait until you are in an area with a better connection.

Low cellular data connectivity is generally the main factor that contributes to difficulty uploading. Your local cell tower and service area/provider my be the ultimate culprit and those convenient service bars on your device that indicate connectivity, are not always the most reliable indicator of upload capability (read more here).  If you’d like to gain insight into your actual connection speed, we recommend you download the following app now so when you are in the field, you can accurately gauge your cellular connection and plan accordingly:

1.  Download Speed Test by Ookla for either iPhone or Android.

2.  “Allow” the app to use location and tap “Begin Test”:

Begin Test

3.  Note your results and share if needed with a Tout team member if you are trouble shooting:

Share Speed Test ResultsEmail Speed Test Results
With a (poor) 1Mbps connection, 0.125 (1/8) MB will upload per second.  Meaning it will take roughly 192 seconds to upload a 60 second Tout video.  Generally, a 60 second Tout video is between 14-24 MB.
Still having trouble?  Try these Tout Tips.

How do I make a video using only still photos?

If no live footage is available, use the iOS Tout app to quickly and easily create a videos using only still photos.

  • Open trending article on your mobile device. Save photos by holding down on the photo, then clicking “Save Image”, or have photographer email you the photos and download to your device.
  • Once you’ve grabbed all desired images, open the Tout app and sign in with work email and password
  • Tap camera icon
  • Tap stacked boxes icon (top left) to open your camera roll
  • Select “Photos” (bottom right) and select first image
  • Tap stacked boxes icon (now on bottom left), and select next image
  • Repeat process until all photos are imported
    • Note: each photo will appear for 3-seconds, therefore upload as many photos as needed to tell your story
  • Tap microphone icon (bottom right) to begin voiceover
  • Take short segment of text from article that summarizes the story
  • Tap microphone icon to begin recording voiceover, reading the short segment aloud
  • Tap screen to preview, microphone again to re-record or “Done” (top-right) if satisfied.
  • Enter in video title and click “Submit” (top-right)

Note: the ability to grab still photos and/or record voiceover are not yet available in the Android app.

How is the Tout Score calculated?

Screen Shot 2015-10-16 at 3.08.57 PM

Your Tout Score is a score out of five possible points designed to help your organization see how it’s performing on Tout. It takes a weighted average of three different metrics into account:

Content

Content is a measure of the amount of local video your organization creates.

Touts Per Active Contributor – The number of Touts published divided by the number of contributors in your organization who have created a tout over the report time frame.

Quantity
Quantity is a measure of how many of your website’s pages have Tout video. Local Touts are preferable to national videos from the Tout Marketplace, as they guarantee your organization a larger share of ad revenue.

Quantitative Match Rate – The percentage of your organization’s articles that have been matched with Tout video. This metric counts matches made by Tout’s Smart Article system as well as those made by a member of your organization through the Partner Panel Dashboard Smart Article tab.

Local Match Percentage – The percentage of your organization’s matches that were made with a locally-produced Tout.

Quality
Quality is a measure of how many views your Touts receive.

Views Per Tout – The average number of views per Tout.

How do I use the curation service?

The purpose of the daily curation emails is to showcase a selection of top trending videos across three major categories: Breaking News, Sports and Lifestyle/ Entertainment. Emails are sent daily, directly to your inbox, at 5am PST. This enables users to conveniently source and embed top news videos to their website to improve overall view counts and therefore increase advertising revenue to the organization.

To sign up for our curation service, email editorial@tout.com

A catalog of previous top daily trending videos can also be found on the Blog.

The embed codes in the email are personalized to your organization’s Brand UID, so any ad revenue generated by the video will automatically be sent to your publication.

How to make the most of the daily curation emails

There are two main ways to ensure maximum views for Tout trending videos on your website:

  1. Embedding the video into a pre-existing article about a related topic
  2. Creating a new article specifically about the embedded video

How do I embed a video in my article?

From the Curation Emails

  1. Copy the personalized embed code from the email
  2. Paste it on an article page in your Content Management System editor

Note: Videos in the curation emails are configured to auto-play with sound on when visible.

From the Curation Blog

  1. Click the “Grab Embed Code” button next to the video you want to embed. This will take you to the video entry in the Tout Marketplace
  2. Click “Embed” on the resulting page
  3. Configure your embed attributes (auto-play, sound on etc.) in the resulting pop-up
  4. Copy the personalized embed code and paste it on an article page in your Content Management System editor

Visit the Tout Marketplace to view more videos or change the auto-play configuration for your embeds

How do I create, manage, edit or delete my Organization’s Smart Article matches?

Admins can manage their Organization’s matches via partner.tout.com. The majority of this is done within the “Smart Article” tab (left navigation)

The Tout Smart-Article system can auto-match a video uploaded from your publication or 3rd party video to a contextually relevant article on your site. With feedback from our partners, Tout has enhanced the Smart Article system to enable Tout Admins/Editors of a publication to remove or edit the video in the top or mid article location of any page. Furthermore, you can replace an existing Mid-Article player “Related Match” with a specific video of your choosing.

Create, Edit or Delete Existing Match

  • Log into your Tout dashboard
  • Navigate to the Smart-Article tab
  • Current video matches will be indicated as ‘Matched’ and can be removed or changed to a different video if desired, by clicking “Edit” then select a video of your choosing.
  • If there is no video match, you can manually match a video to either the Top or Middle of the page by clicking “Match” and selecting the video of your choosing.

Click on the video title to review the content or the page title to navigate to the page on your site.

NOTE: For many of our partners that are uploading their own video, if no match has been created in the Mid-Article placement, it will automatically display your publication’s most recent locally created video or a ‘related video.’ You can always create a specific video match for that particular page with the directions above.

Matches can be created from multiple areas of the Partner Dashboard

    Match Article with Local Video

    • Select “Smart Article” (left navigation)
    • Click “Create Match” button at top of page
    • Locate article you’d like to match
    • Click “Create Match”
    • Locate video you’d like to pair from the list of your Organization’s videos
    • Click “Create Match” below the desired video

    Match Local Video with Article

    • Select “Videos” (left navigation)
    • Within the “Published” section, locate local video you’d like to match
    • Click “Match” to the right of the video
    • Locate article you’d like to pair from the list of your Organization’s articles
    • Click “Match” next to the desired article

    Match National Video with Article

    • Select “Marketplace” (left navigation)
    • Locate video you’d like top pair from the list of Marketplace videos
    • Click “Match” to the right of the video
    • Locate article you’d like to pair from the list of your Organization’s articles
    • Click “Match” next to the desired article

Why are my videos listed under “Pending Review”?

If your videos are listed under “Pending Review”, this means that you are listed as “Moderated” in your brand’s Organization, requiring all videos be approved before going live.

You may contact your Organization’s Admin Editor and request that your privileges be changed from “Moderated” to “Automatic” publishing.

What are hashtags and @mentions and why should I use them?

Hashtag

A hashtag is a “#” symbol put in front of a word/idea/phrase to identify and tag content on a specific topic. The “#” symbol serves two main purposes: organize content, and increase discoverability and views.

Organizing Content

If you create a series of related videos, including a consistent hashtag will help to tie them together. For Premium Members, it will also make it easy for your Admins/Editors to pull them into related articles and/or create custom feeds. For example, if you regularly cover the one sports team, you could tag all related videos with #[sportsteam]. If your property has a specific section page for that team, than the Admin/Editor may create a feed and pull in all videos through this consistent hashtag, like was done here: http://www.denverpost.com/nuggets.

Here are more examples where a consistent hashtag was used to organize content:
– #sydneytohobart: http://www.theaustralian.com.au/sport/sydney-hobart.
– #peoplecannes: http://www.people.com/people/special/0,,20810721,00.html.

Increasing Discoverability and Views

If you share your video to Twitter/Facebook, including the hashtag will help that Tweet/Post show up in Search, increasing the potential views.

Depending on the type of content you create, research typical trending hashtags. For example, if you cover weather in Denver, #Cowx is a popular hashtag used to describe all weather conditions and events relevant to the state.

@Mention

An @mention is an “@” symbol put in front of a username to identify and/or notify a particular person or brand. Like hashtags, @mentions can help increase discoverability and views for your video.

If you plan to share this video to Twitter, be sure to include the person or brand’s Twitter username (a.k.a, handle). Upon sharing the video to Twitter, the user will be notified and have the opportunity to re-Tweet.

Members: @mention your brand account in all video titles, so that Admins/Editors may easily re-Tweet your content upon sharing to Twitter.

How do I schedule a video?

Member
The ability to schedule a video can only be done by your Admin/Editor. To do so, your editor would need to change your privileges to Moderated, requiring them to approve all of your video before going live. As part of the approval process, they could schedule a video to go live at a specific time. We plan to bring the ability to schedule videos directly into the Tout app in the future. In the meantime, here are two potential workarounds:

  1. Turn Queue off to turn off automatic publishing. Store the video in your queue and toggle the queue back on when you are ready to publish your video.
  2. If you have the “Save to Camera Roll/Gallery” feature enabled, all videos will be saved to your device. With the Queue turned off, delete the video from the queue. When you are ready to publish the video, with the Queue turned back on, grab the video from your Camera Roll/Gallery and proceed to publish. (Use this option if you want to continue to publish other videos in the interim, as the first option will store all new videos in the queue until toggled back on.)

    • When not to use the Organization Stream: section-specific and/or content-targeted Players. Static, section-specific Players (e.g., Sports, Entertainment, Business, etc), may still require moderation to their Content Feeds as new users are added and/or removed from your Organization.

How do I direct traffic to my website instead of Tout.com?

Social Redirects may be implemented by Tout. Once this is implemented, any visitor that clicks on a Tout.com link (via social media or direct link) will be redirected to a designated Player and Page on your website.

To implement Social Redirects for your Organization, contact support@tout.com with the subject line “Social Redirects for [Organization Name]”  and provide the link to the page on which the Player can be found. (If there are multiple Players on that page, please specify the desired Player).

At the moment, all videos from users in your Organization will redirect to the single location that you specify. It is important that the Player is not removed from this page, as that will disable the Social Redirect functionality. Email support@tout.com if you would like to change the destination page for your Social Redirects.

How do I integrate Tout with my custom-built application or Content Management System?

If you have your own custom-built application or content management system you can use our WebHooks distribution feature to integrate your system with Tout.

Step 1: Customize your Application or Content Management System

(Forward this information to your technology or application development team)

    • Set-up or modify your existing application or content management system to receive incoming requests from Tout. You must be able to receive incoming HTTP POST requests using the http or https protocol.
    • The message sent by Tout will be a JSON-encoded string on the request body. This message will have the following structure:

    “Tout”: {
    “name”: “Tout Title”,
    “description”: “Tout Description”,
    “tags”: “Tout,tags,separated,by,commas”,
    “video_url”: “http://thevideourloftheTout.com”,
    “video_privacy”: “Tout Privacy”,
    “Tout_video_uid”: “Tout Unique Identifier”
    }

    • You are responsible for securing the communication between Tout and your system. Securing the communication can be accomplished by using the https protocol and/or restricting your system to only receive incoming messages from the *.Tout.com domain namespace.
    • Provide the URL on which you will receive incoming requests to the person responsible for configuring the integration in the Tout system.

    Step 2: Set-Up Integration at partner.tout.com

    • Sign in to partner.tout.com with Admin email and password
    • Click “Distribution” (left navigation)
    • Find “Webhooks” and enter Custom URL provided by your development team
    • Click “Connect” (blue button)

By default, all approved Touts in your Organization will automatically be pushed through Webhooks. Email support@tout.com if you would like only a specific stream of content.

    • Include ad tags in all Video Players
    • Categorize Video Players specifically by sections, hashtags, and @users
    • Important Note: Do not embed Video Player within another iFrame; this will prevent some Video Player tracking capabilities and will disable social redirect implementation

I’m part of an Organization; how come I can only record up to 15-seconds clips?

In order to get Tout’s enhanced features and functionality (like record/upload up to 60 seconds in the mobile app) you must first be invited to an organization by an Admin/Editor of your publications organization.

If you have received and accepted the invite link from your Organization and the time limit in your Tout camera is still 15 seconds, try these solutions:

    • Force quit the Tout app
    • Reopen the mobile app and check if the new recording time has been reflected.
    • Double check that the current account you are logged into is the one that has been upgraded by your organization’s admin.

Not the username that should be upgraded?

      • Log out of the app
      • Sign in with the credentials associated with your account.
      • Email support@tout.com and provide the username of the duplicate account so that we may remove it from Tout.

    • Select “Settings”
