ACBJ Ad Targeting Options

There are a number of different ways you can target locally-sold ad campaigns serving within Tout Players. Your current targeting options are listed below:

 

A. Target by Region (e.g., Austin, Denver, etc)

Step 1: (Done only once)Create new “cntntBrand=” key-value in DFP

  • Select “Inventory” (top-nav)
  • Select “Custom Targeting” or “Key-values”* (left-nav)
    • *We’ve noticed DFP sometimes changes this verbiage, but these two terms are synonymous
  • Select “New Key” (red button on top-left)
    • Name: cntntBrand (enter in exactly as it appears)
    • Values type: keep as is, with the first circle selected
  • Click “Save”

Step 2: Identify Content Brand UID that you would like to target

This can be found in column D of your “Implementation Spreadsheet

 

Step 3: Edit desired line item with video targeting or blocking criteria 

  • Locate the line item associated to the desired pre-roll campaign
  • Click “Edit”
  • Under “Add targeting”, select “Custom Targeting” or “Key-values” (depending on which term is displayed)
  • Under key-values, select “cntntBrand” from the list of keys
  • Paste in the 6-character Content Brand UID from step 2 into the text field
  • Save line item

B. Target by Video

Step 1: (Done only once) Create new “ToutUid” key-value in DFP

  • Select “Inventory” (top-nav)
  • Select “Custom Targeting” or “Key-values”* (left-nav)
    • *We’ve noticed DFP sometimes changes this verbiage, but these two terms are synonymous
  • Select “New Key” (red button on top-left)
    • Name: toutUid (enter in exactly as it appears)
    • Values type: keep as is, with the first circle selected
  • Click “Save”

Step 2: Identify video ID that you would like to target or block

  • Locate video(s) from the Partner Dashboard
  • Click “Direct Link”
  • Grab the last six characters at the end of the URL string (highlighted in blue here: http://www.tout.com/m/wnf97x); this is the toutUid
  • Copy to clipboard or text file; you’ll need this in step three

Step 3: Edit desired line item with video targeting or blocking criteria 

  • Locate the line item associated to the desired pre-roll campaign
  • Click “Edit”
  • Under “Add targeting”, select “Custom Targeting” or “Key-values” (depending on which term is displayed)
  • Under key-values, select “toutUid” from the list of keys
  • Paste in the 6-character toutUid from step 2 into the text field
  • Save line item

C. Target by Contributor

Step 1: (Done only once) Create new “ToutUser” key-value in DFP

  • Select “Inventory” (top-nav)
  • Select “Custom Targeting” or “Key-values”* (left-nav)
  • Select “New Key” (red button on top-left)
    • Name: toutUser (enter in exactly as it appears)
    • Values type: keep as is, with the first circle selected
  • Click “Save”

Step 2: Identify User that you would like to target or block

  • Locate contributor from the “Memberships” section of the Partner Dashboard
  • Click the Username (in blue)
  • Grab the last six characters at the end of the URL string (highlighted in blue here: http://www.tout.com/u/wgf97x); this is the Contributor’s “UID” (different from their username, unless your account was created prior to 2015)
  • Copy to clipboard or text file; you’ll need this in step three

Step 3: Edit desired line item with video targeting or blocking criteria 

  • Locate the line item associated to the desired pre-roll campaign
  • Click “Edit”
  • Under “Add targeting”, select “Custom Targeting” or “Key-values” (depending on which term is displayed)
  • Under key-values, select “toutUser” from the list of keys
    • Select is” to target, or “is not” to block specific videos
  • Paste in the 6-character Contributor UID from step 2 into the text field
    • It is important to paste in the UID (not username); this field is used over username as it will remain unchanged.
  • Save line item

D. Target by Custom Tag

Step 1: (Done Once) Create New “Tag” Key Value in DFP

  • Select “Inventory” (top-nav)
  • Select “Custom Targeting” or “Key-values”* (left-nav)
    • *We’ve noticed DFP sometimes changes this verbiage, but these two terms are synonymous
  • Select “New Key” (red button on top-left)
    • Name: toutCtmA1 (enter exactly as appears, stands for Tout Custom Attribute 1 a.k.a, Tag.)
    • Values type: keep as is, with the first circle selected
  • Click “Save”

Step 2: Assign Tag to local video(s) in Tout’s Partner Dashboard

  • Locate the video to be targeted to the pre-roll campaign from the “Pending”, “Schedule” or “Published” sections of the Partner Dashboard
  • Click “Edit” to the right of the video
  • Click “Tags: (edit)” to assign existing or create new tag
    • To pre-create Tags (e.g., if pre-roll campaign is sold before applicable videos have been published):
      • Enter tag name (no spaces) in “new tag” field and click “+ Create New”
      • Repeat process (if desired) to create additional tags
      • Click Submit or Cancel (your changes will be saved either way)
  • Select desired tag (only one tag can be assigned per video)
  • Click “Submit” to save results

Step 3: Add Tag targeting to desired Line Item

  • Locate the line item associated to the desired pre-roll campaign
  • Click “Edit”
  • Under “Add targeting”, select “Custom Targeting” or “Key-values” (depending on which term is displayed)
  • Under key-values, select “toutCtmA1” from the list of keys
    • Select is” to target, or “is not” to block specific videos
  • Paste in the tag exactly as it appears in the Partner Dashboard (assigned in Step 2)
  • Save Line Item

A few notes regarding targeting by Custom Tag:

  • As stated above, only one tag can be assigned per video, but multiple tags may be assigned per Line Item. When in doubt, we recommend selecting the most specific tag for the video (e.g., select “Basketball” versus “Sports”. If a pre-roll campaign is sold against all Sports, you may target “Basketball” and “Sports” within the line item.
  • The ability for reporters to tag videos at the time of publication via the Tout App or Dashboard Upload is not yet available.
